You have an idea for a dog or cat supplement. You find several companies, send enquiries and wait. One only offers ready-made products, another cannot accommodate small batches, and a third does not serve the pet sector. The problem starts before the first email: a contact list is not yet a shortlist of suitable manufacturers.

Treat supplier selection as a series of fit checks. This makes the first conversation about your product rather than whether you have contacted the right business.

Describe the product before searching

“Pet supplement” does not tell a manufacturer which technology you need. A powder added to feed, a paste in a tube, an oil with a pump and a soft chew require different manufacturing and packing capabilities.

Before searching, record four points:

  • the target species and customer, such as adult dogs and owners buying online;
  • the product format and method of administration;
  • the cooperation model: an existing formula, adaptation of a base or development from scratch;
  • launch constraints: first-batch budget, intended scale and sales market.

You do not need a complete formula. You should know which requirements are essential and which can change. If the cooperation model is unclear, read our comparison of white label, private label and custom formulation.

Not every pet-sector company can make your product

Search results can include brand owners, ingredient distributors, laboratories and consultants. They may be valuable project partners, but operating in the sector does not establish contract manufacturing capability.

Check whether the company describes manufacturing for other brands. Then look for information about species, formats, packaging and formulation development. Mark broad or missing information as “to confirm”. Missing data does not prove a capability is unavailable, but it should not become an assumed “yes”.

A quality certificate or factory photograph does not establish whether the site will take on your project. You need confirmation of the service scope, followed by documents relevant to the actual cooperation.

Shortlist against essential requirements

First eliminate technological mismatches. For a paste in a tube, powder-blending experience is insufficient. Next check the cooperation model and scale. A catalogue supplier may be appropriate for market testing but unsuitable for a project requiring control of a custom formula.

For each contact, record:

  • why the company appears relevant;
  • what the available source confirms;
  • what needs checking in the first conversation.

This note is more useful than a company name and email address alone. It also helps another team member continue the work.

Need to clarify the concept before contacting suppliers?

FoodUP helps turn an idea into product requirements and a manufacturer brief. Email team@foodup.com.pl with the species, format and project stage. If you want to manage sourcing yourself, a prepared database can shorten the information-gathering stage.

Use the first email to establish fit

Instead of requesting the entire price list, describe the project and ask whether the company supports that format and cooperation model. Ask which information is required for quotation and what determines the minimum batch.

For example: “We are planning an own-brand powder for adult dogs, intended to be added to their feed. We need a partner for formulation development and packing into jars. Do you provide this scope? Please explain your brief requirements, how MOQ is determined and the stages from sample to first batch.”

This is an example enquiry, not a complete specification. Share confidential information within an agreed scope after establishing how it will be protected.

Separate commercial fit from site qualification

A positive reply starts the conversation. It does not complete assessment. Registration and, where applicable, approval depend on the activities carried out; check the relevant scope under Articles 9 and 10 of Regulation 183/2005.

Separately establish labelling responsibilities. Article 12 of Regulation 767/2009 identifies the operator responsible for labelling; outsourcing production does not automatically settle the brand's obligations. Address these points before launch rather than sending an identical documentation request to every business you find.

Start with contacts you can use

The FoodUP report on pet supplement manufacturers, available in Polish gathers and analyses 100 companies and partners. Profiles, contacts, product-format analysis and brief guidance help you move from browsing the market to sending enquiries.

Not every listed business is a contract manufacturer. Select candidates for your project and confirm availability, technology and terms directly. The value lies in using information research that has already been carried out.

FAQ

Can every human supplement manufacturer also make pet products?

Do not assume so. Confirm the activities, species, technology and willingness to handle a product subject to the applicable feed requirements.

Should I only look for manufacturers in Poland?

Location is one criterion. Technology, cooperation model, logistics and scale also matter. Proximity does not replace suitability.

Does no reply mean my concept is poor?

No. The email may have reached the wrong person, lacked essential information or concerned an unsupported service. Check the contact and fit, then clarify the message.

Does a contact database replace manufacturer qualification?

No. It helps identify candidates and information sources. Assessment of documents, site capability and cooperation terms follows at a later stage.
